WhyLeft vs. Quitlo: an email or a phone call?

Quitlo phones customers with an AI voice agent. WhyLeft emails them and follows up in writing. Both are trying to have a real conversation about why someone left, and they suit quite different customers.

Two ideas of what a conversation should be

Quitlo and WhyLeft agree on the important thing: a dropdown in a cancel flow rarely tells you the real reason, and a conversation that follows up does. They disagree about the medium.

Quitlo's answer is the phone. Its AI voice product (opens in a new tab) describes "churn exit calls" placed within minutes of a cancellation. The agent says it's an AI and asks for recording consent at the start, then asks what led to the decision and follows up on what it hears. The customer can say "stop" to end the call. Afterwards your team gets a structured summary in Slack, with the main reason, any competitor mentioned, whether they might return, a key quote and a suggested action.

WhyLeft's answer is the inbox. The customer gets a plain-text question from your own address a couple of minutes after cancelling, and answers in their own time by replying. WhyLeft reads the reply and asks one follow-up written from it. If they want to keep talking, the conversation can continue in a private hosted chat. Every answer is tagged and added to a cross-interview view weighted by the revenue behind it.

Where a voice call is strong

  • Tone carries information. Hesitation, frustration or enthusiasm comes through in a voice in a way it rarely does in a two-line email.
  • Several follow-ups happen in one sitting. A short call can cover the reason, what led up to it and whether anything would bring them back, without a back-and-forth over days.
  • The summary arrives fast. If you want a Slack message with the reason minutes after the call, voice delivers it.
  • One agent covers several moments. Quitlo uses the same approach for failed payments, low NPS scores, onboarding check-ins and win-back, which may suit a team that wants a single system for customer calls.

Where an email is strong

  • The customer chooses when to answer. Nobody has to be free when the phone rings, and a reply written later is often more considered.
  • It only needs an email address. Most SaaS sign-ups collect one and nothing else. A phone number is optional at best for many self-serve products.
  • The record is verbatim. You keep exactly what the customer wrote, which is what you'll quote to your team, rather than a summary of a call.
  • It's low-pressure. An email asks for nothing more than a reply. Some people who'd decline an unexpected call from a company they've just left will happily write two sentences.
  • It costs less. At $29 a month, it can run from your first cancellation.

Practical things to check before choosing

  • Do you have phone numbers? Look at what share of your recent cancellations have one in your billing system. If it's low, a calling product will only reach that share. This is a general point about any voice tool, not a claim about how Quitlo handles missing numbers, which its site doesn't say.
  • Will your customers pick up? Phone works well where customers already expect calls from vendors. In products where every interaction is self-serve, an unexpected call can feel intrusive. That's our judgement, and you know your customers better than we do.
  • Consent and recording rules. Quitlo says it discloses the AI and recording consent at the start of every call, and mentions GDPR and CCPA. Rules on automated calls and recording vary by country and state, so check your own obligations. This isn't legal advice.
  • Billing stack. Quitlo lists Stripe as its billing integration. If you're on Paddle, Polar or Lemon Squeezy, that matters.
  • Language. Quitlo's site doesn't say which languages its agent speaks. If you have customers outside English-speaking markets, ask.

Who should choose which

Quitlo is likely the better fit if

  • Failed payments are a big revenue problem and you want an AI that phones customers about them.
  • Your customers are businesses that routinely take calls and have phone numbers on file.
  • You want one platform covering payment recovery, exit calls, NPS follow-up and win-back, and your budget covers several hundred dollars a month or more.
  • You're on Stripe.

WhyLeft is likely the better fit if

  • Your customers sign up with an email address and rarely talk to you on the phone.
  • You want the customer's reason in their own written words, with a follow-up, and patterns across every interview.
  • You bill through Paddle, Polar or Lemon Squeezy as well as, or instead of, Stripe.
  • You're a founder or small team and want this running from the first cancellation without a large monthly commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quitlo an exit-interview tool or a payment-recovery tool?

Both. As of October 2026 its homepage leads with AI calls for failed payments, while its AI voice product page also describes churn exit calls, NPS follow-ups, onboarding check-ins and win-back calls. Its pricing reflects that: payment recovery is the entry point, and the other modules are add-ons or part of the full platform.

Can WhyLeft call customers?

No. WhyLeft works by email, with an optional hosted chat for customers who want to keep talking. If voice is essential to you, it isn't the right tool.

Are AI phone calls to customers allowed?

It depends on where you and your customers are, and on how the call is made. Quitlo states that every call discloses the AI and asks for recording consent up front. Check the rules that apply to your business with someone qualified; we can't give legal advice.

Which gets more responses, a call or an email?

We don't know of an independent comparison, and the figures vendors publish are measured on their own customers. It will depend heavily on your audience. We discuss why in exit interviews vs. cancellation surveys.
