WhyLeft vs. Churnkey: which churn tool fits your SaaS?

Churnkey works at the cancel button: cancel flows, offers and payment recovery. WhyLeft works just after it, asking the customer why by email and following up. An honest look at which approach fits which team.

The core difference: when you ask, and why

Both products want to know why customers cancel. The difference is when they ask and what the asking is for.

Churnkey asks inside the cancellation. Its Cancel Flows (opens in a new tab) show a survey and, depending on the answer and the customer's segment, an offer such as a discount, a pause or a downgrade. The question and the save attempt are part of the same moment. Feedback from that survey, including optional open text, is then analysed by its Feedback AI.

WhyLeft asks after the cancellation. A couple of minutes after it's confirmed, the customer gets a short plain-text email from your address that they can answer by replying. WhyLeft then writes one follow-up question based on what they said. There's no offer and no attempt to reverse the decision, by design.

In our view, that's the whole comparison in miniature. Churnkey is optimised to change the outcome of the cancellation. WhyLeft is optimised to explain it. Both are legitimate goals, and plenty of companies need both.

WhyLeft and Churnkey compared, as of 15 October 2026. Churnkey's rows are summarised from churnkey.co. "Not described" means we couldn't find it on the public site, not that it definitely doesn't exist.

What Churnkey does well

  • Cancel flows are its core, and they're mature: segmentation, a range of offer types, A/B testing, and an open-source SDK and hosted option for implementation.
  • Payment recovery goes well beyond reminders. Smart retries on top of Stripe's own logic, multi-channel dunning and a payment wall cover failed payments more thoroughly than a simple email sequence.
  • Its Feedback AI already does what we'd consider table stakes for this category: themes, sentiment, search, and ranking feedback by the MRR of the customer who gave it.
  • Billing coverage suits more established stacks. Chargebee, Braintree, Maxio and Recurly are all listed, which matters if you're not on Stripe or Paddle.
  • It's a single platform for several retention jobs, which can mean fewer tools to stitch together.

What WhyLeft does well

  • The question arrives as an ordinary email from you, not a form. Customers answer by hitting reply, in their own words, after the pressure of the cancellation is over.
  • It follows up. One contextual follow-up is often the difference between "too expensive" and the specific threshold, feature or competitor behind it.
  • It's restrained by design: at most two emails per interview, enforced in code, with one-click unsubscribe, and no save offers or cancellation friction.
  • The analysis is built around reading, not just counting. Tags are editable, the customer's words sit beside every label, and Wylo Copilot can answer questions about your churn with the interviews it drew on.
  • It supports Polar and Lemon Squeezy as well as Stripe and Paddle, which suits a lot of smaller and indie SaaS businesses.
  • The price is low enough to run from the first cancellation: $29 a month, one plan, no tiers.

The trade-offs

Where Churnkey may not fit

  • Cost at small scale. Pricing starts at $250 a month and scales with your monthly churned revenue. For a company with a few thousand dollars in MRR, that's a large share of revenue. That's our judgement, not Churnkey's framing.
  • Feedback is collected mid-cancellation. Survey answers given while someone is trying to leave, and possibly weighing an offer, tend to be quicker and shallower than a reply written afterwards.
  • The most complete AI tier isn't monthly. Feedback AI is listed as limited on Starter; the Intelligence plan includes it in full and is billed yearly or quarterly.
  • We didn't find Polar or Lemon Squeezy among its listed billing integrations.

Where WhyLeft may not fit

  • It won't save a cancellation at the button. There are no discounts, pauses or downgrade offers. If your main goal is a higher save rate, WhyLeft isn't built for it.
  • You hear only from people who reply. Email reaches fewer people than an in-flow survey, although WhyLeft's optional in-app capture helps close that gap.
  • Payment recovery is deliberately simple: a capped reminder sequence, not smart retries or SMS. Teams whose failed-payment volume is a major revenue line will want a dedicated tool.
  • No native Chargebee, Recurly, Braintree or Maxio integration. Those stacks work through the API, which means a little engineering.
  • It's a younger product. We don't have a long list of public case studies yet, and you should weigh that.

The same customer, both ways

Imagine a customer on a $79 plan who cancels and says the product is too expensive.

With Churnkey, they select "too expensive" in the cancel flow. Depending on how you've configured it, they might be offered 30% off for three months or a pause. If they accept, the subscription continues and the save shows up in your analytics. If they add a comment, Feedback AI groups it with similar responses and shows the MRR behind that theme.

With WhyLeft, the cancellation goes through. A few minutes later they get an email asking what made them decide to cancel. They reply "too expensive for us right now". WhyLeft asks whether there was a point where it stopped feeling worth the price. They reply that they only used the reporting, and a spreadsheet template does most of that for free. That's tagged and weighted by the $79, and it sits next to every other customer who said something similar.

Churnkey's path may keep $79 a month that WhyLeft's lets go. WhyLeft's path tells you that some of your price complaints are really about one feature being replicable by a template, which is a product and positioning question a discount can't answer. Which outcome matters more to you right now is the real decision.

Who should choose which

Churnkey is likely the better fit if

  • You have enough cancellation volume that improving your save rate by a few points is worth real money each month.
  • Failed payments are a significant source of lost revenue and you want retries, SMS and in-app dunning.
  • You're on Chargebee, Braintree, Maxio or Recurly and want a native integration.
  • Your budget comfortably covers a few hundred dollars a month or more for retention tooling.

WhyLeft is likely the better fit if

  • You're a founder or small team and the question you can't answer is why people leave, not how to stop them at the button.
  • You'd rather not put offers or extra steps in your cancellation path.
  • You want the customer's own words, with a follow-up, rather than a selection from a list.
  • You bill through Stripe, Paddle, Polar or Lemon Squeezy and want something running in minutes for $29 a month.

Can you use both?

In principle, yes, because they work at different moments. A cancel flow handles the button. Customers who still cancel get an exit interview afterwards, and customers who accept an offer never cancel, so they'd never receive one. The thing to avoid is asking the same customer the same question twice in an hour. If you combine tools, make the interview follow up on what the survey already captured rather than starting over. We cover that pattern in exit interviews vs. cancellation surveys.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhyLeft a Churnkey alternative?

For understanding churn, yes. For saving customers at the cancel button, no. WhyLeft doesn't make offers, so it can't replace that part of Churnkey. If you mainly use Churnkey for its feedback analysis and rarely rely on the offers, WhyLeft is a much cheaper way to get deeper feedback.

Does Churnkey use AI?

Yes. Its Feedback AI categorises open-text responses and links them to revenue, Adaptive Offers personalise offers, and its Account Agent reviews your retention setup and recommends changes. What we didn't find described is AI asking the customer a follow-up question.

Does WhyLeft offer discounts to customers who cancel?

No. That's a product decision, not a missing feature. WhyLeft asks a question and gets out of the way. Win-back emails go only to customers whose stated reason you've since addressed.

Which is cheaper?

WhyLeft is $29 a month. Churnkey starts at $250 a month on annual billing, and higher tiers scale with your monthly churned revenue. They don't do the same jobs, though, so compare the price to the job you need done rather than to each other.
